New Zealand-based king salmon producer Mount Cook Alpine Salmon is achieving good results in fish production thanks to the introduction of the A-BIOMASS® camera developed by the aquaculture technology company Ace Aquatec.

As a result, the Scottish company is expanding its award-winning system into Oceania, and other farmers in New Zealand are looking to achieve the same results, as confirmed by Ace Aquatech in a statement.

Regarding this partnership, the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Ace Aquatec, Tara McGregor-Woodhams, noted: "Our partnership with Mount Cook Alpine Salmon reflects the global appeal of our products, as we bring Scottish-born technology to the other side of the planet. We're already seeing that this installation is generating buzz around the benefits of the A-BIOMASS® device, and we're looking forward to expanding its presence in this region and worldwide."

How the A-BIOMASS® camera works

The A-BIOMASS® gives more efficiency and precision to biomass measurement and distributions of a range of fish species. To achieve that real-time accuracy, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are used. Weighing just 8.5 kg, its small size makes it easier to deploy than many others on the market.

In more detail, the A-BIOMASS® camera has achieved an average accuracy of 97% across multiple harvests over the last 18 months, and up to 99.75% in individual harvests.

"Individual harvest results have significantly improved, and we hope to expand the use of these devices across more sites in the future to further optimize our operations," explained the General Manager at Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Jon Bailey.

Ace Aquatec also created the Humane Stunner Universal (A-HSU®) technology which stuns fish into unconsciousness in less than a second and is being used at Piszolla's trout farm site in Alba de Tormes, Salamanca, Spain.

Mount Cook site characteristics

Ace Aquatec technology is specially designed to operate in challenging environments, such as glacial melt water, locations with the unique visibility of starlight, or areas with a wide variety of fish.

The salmon farms at Mount Cook are situated within a network of flowing waterways that connect three alpine lakes. Alpine Salmon has been able to identify which fish are most prudent to harvest, thereby creating a safer and more sustainable environment.
