Fresh By Design to supply new RAS systems at Australia's Gaden Trout Hatchery

The four Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) will maintain stable water quality, ensure operational reliability, and provide a high level of control over all critical parameters.
The expansion of the facility will significantly increase hatchery capacity, with the potential to produce up to 20 tonnes of trout per year.

The company specialized in the design, engineering, and construction of aquaculture systems, Fresh By Design, has signed a contract with the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fisheries/NSW DPI) in New South Wales, Australia, to design and construct new hatchery systems at the Gaden Trout Hatchery.

As early as November 2025, the Government of NSW confirmed the construction of a new $5 million fish production facility, funded by Snowy Hydro, to expand the breeding capacity of the Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne.

The new facility will feature a state-of-the-art recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), enabling the high-standard production of rainbow and brown trout fingerlings to help mitigate the impact of invasive species such as redfin.

The facility will also feature four Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), each with four 5,000 L polyethylene circular tanks, providing a modular and repeatable platform for hatchery operations.

The hatchery systems include an OxyGuard International water quality monitoring and control system by Technolab, an automatic feeding system by Arvo-Tec Oy, and aeration supplied by a Turbo Jet blower system from Sprintex Ltd.

The expansion of the facility will significantly increase hatchery capacity, with the potential to produce up to 20 tonnes of trout per year, contributing to the protection of recreational fisheries and mitigating risks associated with climate variability and invasive species.

"Fresh By Design looks forward to working closely with NSW DPI to deliver a robust, efficient, and biosecure hatchery system that supports long‑term performance and operational flexibility at the Gaden facility," reads a post on their LinkedIn profile.
