Icelandic land-based salmon farming company LAXEY has signed a multi-year commercial agreement with Canadian firm ReelData for the use of its intelligent camera system, ReelWeight.

Laxey has already tested this camera across multiple tanks within its post-smolt facilities, as well as in recently stocked 5,000 m³ grow-out tanks.

This technology is specifically designed for land-based systems and is capable of sampling over 300 individual fish per hour. Its ergonomic handle and built-in connection points also make it easy to move between tanks.

Following the successful results of these trials, Laxey will now be able to replace manual sample weighing techniques with this AI-powered system as its primary method for obtaining sample weights.

"We've been impressed, not only by the functions and functionality of the camera, but also by the support and service offered by the ReelData team. It decided to move from a trial to a full commercial agreement very easily for us," expressed Laxey COO/CTO Hallgrímur Steinsson.

Moreover, Commercial Director for ReelData, Gareth Butterfield, advanced: "We feel confident that ReelData can be the number one supplier of AI-capable technologies in feeding efficiency and biomass estimation in this market. And while Laxey’s recent commitment to ReelWeight is the first of its kind in Iceland, there is still work to be done as we plan to trial ReelAppetite — our AI software designed to maximise growth opportunity and minimise feed waste — at the facility in the coming months."

On Monday, the Icelandic company secured additional €28 million for the development of its land-based facility in Vestmannaeyjar. It has raised a total of €63 million so far this year, with approximately half of that sum coming from new investors.
