The Ministry of Production in Peru (PRODUCE) will modify the Regulations of the Satellite Tracking System for fishing vessels (SISESAT) to expand the market for suppliers of this technology in the country.

Additionally, the minimum technical specifications for being an eligible satellite provider have been outlined, including technical specifications incorporation for alternative equipment or systems.

This initiative will allow for an alternative system or equipment at a lower cost, primarily aimed at artisanal vessels that require such equipment.

In this regard, the Minister of PRODUCE, Sergio González, emphasized: "The regulation seeks to increase competitiveness in the market, allowing for an expansion in the supply of eligible satellite providers, to promote a reduction in the cost of satellite tracking services, which will primarily benefit artisanal and small-scale fishing."

Furthermore, the initiative complies with the required international standards, that will strengthen measures to prevent, deter, and eliminate illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Finally, PRODUCE aims to provide an additional tool for fisher's safety nationwide.

In April 2024, the Peruvian economy grew by 5.28%. According to PRODUCE, the fishing sector contributed the most to this growth after registering an increase of 158.40% compared to the same month of 2023.
