The Director of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM Bari) in Italy, Biagio Di Terlizzi, and Ghana's Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and to promote and implement international cooperation initiatives.

During a visit held in Italy from 15 to 21 February 2026, organized within the framework of the AREA Africa Ghana project, both officials also had the opportunity to discuss and further refine a fisheries development project to be implemented in Ghana.

This initiative is part of the Action for the Strengthening of Agro-Food Ecosystems in Africa (AREA), co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).

CIHEAM Bari serves as the knowledge partner and implementer of the public component, while the Italian agro-industrial group BF Group acts as the private partner. Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) represents the public partner.

Meetings with researchers and visits to sector companies

The Ghanaian delegation visited CIHEAM Bari’s facilities in Bari and Tricase and met with researchers, staff, and Ghanaian Master’s students.

They also visited Italian companies and organizations operating in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors to share best practices in sustainable fisheries management, vocational training, logistics, and seafood production.

"CIHEAM Bari reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovation and the sustainable development of local agri-food systems, including coastal and inland areas of the country," the institute stated in a press release.
