The Government of Canada has confirmed its intention to allocate $957.8 million over five years, starting in 2026–27, for the Small Craft Harbours Program as part of the 2026 Spring Economic Update.

Canada's commercial fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood processing sectors generate nearly 65,000 jobs, and in 2025, Canadian fish and seafood exports totaled $8.47 billion.

First, this initiative will allow the rehabilitation of Breakwater 303 and Basin 201 at Rondeau (Erieau) Harbour, home to 25 commercial fishing vessels. It will also enable Wheatley Harbour, which hosts 59 commercial vessels, to reinforce its East Pier, as well as carry out dredging of the Entrance Channel and the Sediment Sink.

According to the government, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will carry out the improvements with a focus on climate resilience, ensuring they meet the needs of the commercial fishing industry and local communities.

In 2024, the budget proposal presented by Canada's Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard, Diane Lebouthillier, allocated $463.3 million over three years for this same purpose. In this instance, the funding is significantly larger.

"This is the largest investment ever made in small craft harbours, reaffirming this new government's commitment to coastal communities, helping bring Canadian products to market. This funding will keep harbours safe and operational across the country, so rural and coastal economies stay strong and resilient for the long haul," explained Minister of Fisheries, Joanne Thompson.

Moreover, Member of Parliament for London West Arielle Kayabaga said: "Southwestern Ontario's coastal communities have always depended on their harbours, and they deserve the sustained support to keep thriving. This funding is a meaningful investment in the people, livelihoods, and local economies that are the foundation of communities like Wheatley and Erieau."
