The Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, attended the event ‘Fisheries, Insularity and Co-management,’ held in Mallorca, Spain, to deepen his understanding of fisheries in the European Union's island territories.

Representatives of the sector and experts also took part in the event to discuss participatory, effective management models tailored to the realities of fishing fleets.

Kadis, who is visiting Spain for the fourth time, toured a monitoring vessel used to protect the La Graciosa Island and Northern Islets of Lanzarote marine reserve (Canary Islands), and visited the Palma fish auction and the Pere Garau market, where the operation of traditional fishmongers can be observed.

"Fishing is part of the identity of these islands, of the life of their coastal communities, and of the daily activity of many of their ports, which continue to be spaces for social cohesion, the transmission of knowledge, and a strong sense of belonging to the territory," said the Secretary General for Fisheries, Isabel Artime, who accompanied the Commissioner throughout his visit.

Also, she requested that the European Commission submit a proposal to amend the ‘Multiannual Plan for Demersal Fisheries in the Western Mediterranean’ and simplify the Common Fisheries Policy to ensure the economic and social viability of the sector.

Just a few days ago, European organisations representing the fishing, fish processing, aquaculture, and seafood trading sectors released a joint statement calling on the European Commission to rethink the rollout of its new digital fisheries control rules, following the launch of the CATCH system last month.
