The Chilean government plans to introduce a train capable of transporting up to 100 salmon industry containers per week between the Los Lagos and Biobío regions.

BioBioChile, one of Chile's leading digital news outlets, reported that a pilot test was carried out in 2025, during which 15 refrigerated containers of frozen salmon were transported by rail from Puerto Montt to Greater Concepción.

Following the successful results of the trial, the state-owned railway company, EFE (Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado), proposed operating two weekly freight trains between the Los Lagos and Biobío regions.

According to statements reported by BioBioChile, EFE’s General Logistics Manager said: "The project was highly significant and well received by salmon companies, logistics operators, and the Port of San Vicente, which assessed it very positively and is interested in continuing to receive cargo at its terminal."

In addition, Governor Sergio Giacaman highlighted that the initiative will strengthen the region's export capacity and create new employment opportunities.

In March, another initiative promoted by Chile was announced, this time aimed at advancing the circular economy in salmon farming and other industries.

Specifically, CORFO's Los Lagos Regional Directorate introduced the Integrated Territorial Program (PTI) Los Lagos Circular, which includes a total investment of $120 million.

Furthermore, in 2025, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, unveiled the Lagos Aquaculture Centre of Excellence (LACE) Project, which aimed to strengthen the country's food security strategy.
