The government of the state of New South Wales, Australia, has announced a $27 million investment in 31 aquaculture projects, aimed at creating jobs and driving innovation from Tweed Heads to Eden on the South Coast.
In addition, the selected companies will contribute around $14 million, bringing the total investment to $41 million. The NSW Government also increased its initial allocation by $7 million due to the large number of projects focused on modernisation, innovation, and productivity.
"This $41 million investment demonstrates the Minns Government’s commitment to building a modern, sustainable aquaculture sector and positioning NSW as the leader in quality seafood production and marine bioproducts," said Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty.
The funded projects include modern oyster farming, expanded kelp production, and clean energy-powered seafood. This will improve economic outcomes, support sustainability, and help maintain a high-quality seafood supply across the state.
They also include the expansion of oyster hatcheries, process automation, and diversification of production. Another focus is environmental sustainability and innovation, with circular economy projects turning marine waste into new products and restoring ecosystems by using invasive species and improving estuaries.
“Armstrong Oysters thanks the NSW Government for this funding, which will strengthen our hatchery/nursery capacity and deliver reliable, high-quality oyster stock for the industry. This investment will help Armstrong Oysters increase production and support the industry's goal of doubling output by 2030," assured Armstrong Oysters Co-owner Brandon Armstrong.
Finally, Australia Bay Lobster Producers Managing Director and Founder Michael Dalton noted: "The hatchery will grow ornamental finfish to supply the global public aquarium market and position the Tweed Shire as a leader in sustainable marine aquaculture, delivering integrated economic, environmental, and social benefits to boost regional prosperity and ecological sustainability."
