Vietnam's Hà Tĩnh reinforces anti-IUU measures for the second half of 2026

The departments and local authorities of Hà Tĩnh, Vietnam, have committed to continuing their efforts during the second half of 2026 to address existing shortcomings in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The commitment was made during a meeting chaired by Ho Huy Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, where officials reviewed the results achieved during the first half of the year and outlined the key priorities for the coming months.

Among the key priorities are preparations for the inspection by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment scheduled for August 2026, as well as the European Commission's sixth inspection mission, expected in the fourth quarter of the year.

During the next period, the authorities will focus on strengthening fleet monitoring, improving controls at fishing ports, and verifying data with port authorities. They will also take stricter action against VMS (vessel monitoring system) disconnections, fishing in prohibited areas, the use of illegal fishing gear, and other fisheries violations.

In addition, all fishing vessels will be reviewed, specific responsibilities will be assigned to officials, and cases involving vessels without identification, registration numbers, or with damaged licence plates will be addressed.

Finally, the province will continue implementing the Community-Based Management Project for the Protection of Coastal Fisheries Resources through 2030. It will also strengthen training and awareness campaigns, while providing additional support to community organisations to promote sustainable fisheries management.

The province has already issued fishing licences to all 3,888 registered vessels, achieving 100% compliance. "Combating IUU fishing is a priority and urgent political task, focused on fully addressing the existing shortcomings," the Vice Chairman stressed.
