De Heus Animal Nutrition successfully celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of the new plant in Njeru, near Jinja, Uganda. This cutting-edge facility will be the first dedicated aquafeed plant in the African country, marking a historic milestone.

Fully operational, the plant will be able to produce approximately 50,000 metric tons of fish feed per year, meeting the growing demand in the East African market. This is also particularly important due to declining wild catches and rapid population growth.

Thus, with the launch of this plant, a positive boost is given to the aquaculture industry, both in Uganda and neighboring countries. This is part of the trend in the African continent, which has been witnessing a steady evolution and potential. However, this trend requires access to affordable and dependable high-quality feed to further development.

"At De Heus, we believe in the potential of Africa, and that is why we are investing in expanding our footprint: in South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, and recently with modern factories in Ghana and Ivory Coast. And now in Uganda," said Theo Smalbraak, Business Group Director in Africa & Middle East.

Uganda, a fruitful feeding land

Furthermore, Uganda's characteristics as an optimal country for the aquaculture industry are noteworthy. With a geography characterized by large lakes and favorable water temperatures that remain relatively stable throughout the year, it meets an essential part of the industry's requirements.

And the commitment continues on the African continent

The company also explained that it combines global experience and expertise with a wealth of experience in Dutch agricultural innovation. So with that background, they argued that Africa is a win-win. "We strongly believe in Africa's potential, which is why we continue to invest in expanding our presence on the continent. In addition to our presence in South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Ivory Coast, we are proud to establish ourselves in Uganda," they explained in their statement.
