The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) of Liberia has handed over the Fisheries College and Regional Center of Excellence to the University of Liberia. This is one of the first actions the public body is taking to transfer much of its operations to Public-Private Partnerships.

The new UL College of Fisheries and Aquaculture, which is funded by the World Bank, consists of 28 rooms, 14 of which are self-contained, as well as 11 classrooms, 7 offices, and 4 bathrooms.

Regarding this partnership, NaFAA Acting Director General Saygbe expressed: "On behalf of the President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., I extend our deepest appreciation to the World Bank for their unwavering support. Liberia is truly grateful for your continued investment, which will leave a lasting impact on our nation and our people."

On behalf of the World Bank, its lead Economist for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone Stefano Curto said: "We are pleased to partner with the University of Liberia and NaFAA to build an institution that provides the technical know-how necessary for a successful and sustainable fishery sector that can play a crucial role in the Liberian economy and help improve the livelihoods of the Liberian people."

NaFAA promising plans

NaFAA plans to undertake various projects to diversify its revenue streams and empower the Authority to fulfill its mandate as outlined in the 2017 Act.

Two of these are the reconstruction of the Klay Hatchery and improvements at the Robertsports fish landing site to ensure it is fully operational. Additionally, Saygbe confirmed the arrival of semi-industrial fiberglass boats, 15 kru fiberglass canoes, and 8 Fanti canoes.

Moreover, NaFAA will present the self-service platform Fisheries Management Information System (FIMS), focused on reducing revenue leakages and restructuring its operations, which will allow the application and issuance of all licenses, permits, authorizations, and certificates.

Finally, the Liberian authority will reintroduce the national program "Fisheries Hour" on rural community radio stations to disseminate accurate and relevant information, especially for coastal dwellers.
