Voting has opened for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) UK Product of the Year – Consumer Choice Award, with 15 seafood items competing for the title. The shortlist includes a broad mix of products, ranging from chilled meals and tinned fish to pet food and dietary supplements.

According to the MSC, all shortlisted items are made using certified sustainable seafood, sourced from fisheries that meet the organisation’s environmental standards. The competition is intended to highlight the diversity of responsibly sourced products available in UK shops.

Consumers can cast their vote on the MSC website until 29 August. Voters will also be entered into a prize draw to win an Aquaplanet inflatable kayak or one of two Finisterre backpacks.

"The diversity of products on this year’s shortlist for the MSC UK Product of the Year – Consumer Choice Award gives shoppers a flavour of the huge range of the sustainable seafood products currently available in UK stores," said Seth McCurry, MSC UK & Ireland Senior Commercial Manager, in a press release announcing the award.

“The public have got their work cut out to choose between a lifestyle supplement, pet food, family favourite dishes and fresh and ambient seafood. It’s wonderful to see this wide array of products competing for the Award this year and I’m sure it will be a closely contested vote," McCurry added.

This year’s contenders include family favourites such as fish pies and battered cod fillets from major retailers including Asda, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and Iceland. Chilled items like Waitrose’s Moules Marinière and LEAP Wild Smoked Sockeye Salmon are also featured.

The shortlist also includes tinned fish brands Princes, John West and Delicius anchovy fillets, while the Vici Big Seafood Stick and Wiley’s Finest Peak EPA fish oil represent the "snack and supplement" categories. The first-ever pet food entry, Sheba Filets with sustainable tuna, is also in the running.

More than 10,000 votes were cast in last year’s competition, which was won by Tesco’s Finest Cornish Sardines in Tomato Sauce. The 2025 winner will be revealed during the MSC and ASC UK Awards ceremony in Scotland this October.
