Aquaculture biotechnology research firm, the Center for Aquaculture Technologies (CAT), has appointed Matt Kramer as its new Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. He will head CAT’s growing international operations in genetic improvement, with a focus on advancing commercial-scale genome editing for aquaculture.

Kramer is described by CAT as an experienced commercial leader with over 20 years in genomics and life sciences. He previously held senior positions at QIAGEN, Thermo Fisher, Element Biosciences, and Psomagen, where he is said to have led key sales initiatives, developed strategic partnerships, and managed high-performing teams. His professional background includes work in genomics, molecular diagnostics and next generation sequencing technologies.

Commenting on his new role, Kramer said he was “drawn to this role for its combination of strategic scope and purpose - with the opportunity to help shape how genomic and genome-editing technologies transition from research tools into real-world impact”. He added that CAT’s “culture, scientific and aquaculture industry expertise, and long-term vision align strongly with my own values as a leader”.

Kramer also said that “genome editing offers transformative benefits for the global aquaculture industry by enabling targeted genetic improvements that enhance operational productivity, resilience, and sustainability”. He described CAT’s work as an opportunity to “increase the availability of nutritious food while reducing pressure on wild fish stocks”.

Dr John Buchanan, CEO of CAT, said the company was pleased to welcome Kramer to the team. “His experience and leadership will be instrumental as we expand the commercialization of genome editing in aquaculture globally,” Buchanan stated, adding that he was confident Kramer would play a key role in driving innovation, productivity and sustainability within the organisation.

The Center for Aquaculture Technologies recently announced another new hire, appointing Samuel May as its new Genetic Services Lead for the United States and Canada.

The California-based aquaculture genetics specialist firm, which operates globally and is part of the Cuna Del Mar portfolio of companies, manages over 20 breeding programmes across multiple aquatic species, and offers a wide range of services, ranging from genotyping and genome editing to advanced analytics and breeding strategy development.
