Thousands of fish escaped from a Lerøy Midt facility which had already been closed after bacterial kidney disease and pancreas disease were detected.

The company has estimated a preliminary escape extent of 5,000 salmon. The incident occurred at the Naustneset site in Tingvollfjorden in Gjemnes municipality, Møre og Romsdal.

"The plan is for approximately one-third of our salmon to be shielded with new technology by the end of 2024," CEO Henning Beltestad explained.

"Lerøy and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority share a common interest in combating Listeria in the best possible way," said CEO Henning Beltestad.

The salmon farming company says changes to the ASC rules in Scotland "vary from other salmon producing countries" and "are not in the best interests of our fish."

Lerøy's Q4 trading update shows biomass going into 2024 is lower than expected due to effects of string jellyfish during the fourth quarter of 2023.
