The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) in Chile participated in a series of seminars and workshops to raise awareness about the reality of the national aquaculture industry and promote the prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials (AMR).

Every year, during the month of November, the World Health Organization promotes World Antimicrobial Awareness Week with the goal of increasing awareness about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections.

"Under the One Health approach, which recognizes that human health, animal health, and environmental health are interconnected, we address the use of antimicrobials in an integrated manner to reduce resistance and ensure they remain effective in treating diseases," explained Mónica Rojas Noack, Deputy Director of Aquaculture at Sernapesca.

Sernapesca published in June the 'Report on the Use of Antimicrobials and Antiparasitics in Salmon Farming' for 2023 which indicated that the consumption of antimicrobials decreased concerning annual use in freshwater and seawater, confirming the downward trend in the seawater phase over the past six years.

'Update on the Management of Antimicrobial Use in Salmon Farming with a One Health Approach'

The webinar 'Update on the Management of Antimicrobial Use in Salmon Farming with a One Health Approach' featured a presentation by the head of the Animal Health Department, Osvaldo Sandoval, who discussed the optimization of antimicrobial use in salmon farming.

Additionally, the person in charge of drug use control, Francisco Vásquez, provided insights on the new standardized metrics for the use of these substances.

Finally, members of the Association of Veterinarians Linked to Aquaculture (MEVEA) highlighted the role of professionals in the field in the fight against AMR and presented successful cases of optimizing antimicrobial use for the control of Salmonid Rickettsial Septicemia (SRS).
