Scottish salmon producer Loch Duart has introduced a new evaluation process called the 'Loch Duart Standard' to highlight its approach to farming salmon based on natural practices and prioritizing animal welfare.

The 'Loch Duart Standard' will be managed by Leigh Grant Consulting and Partners in Welfare, focusing on small-scale aquaculture, increasing on-site audits, and conducting high-level, independent evaluations by professionals with over 85 years of experience in animal welfare.

"With the introduction of the 'Loch Duart Standard', we've created a bespoke framework tailored specifically to small-scale farming operations and not adapted from large-scale models. This new standard reflects how we farm; hands-on, welfare-led and future-focused," emphasized Managing Director of Loch Duart Salmon Mark Warrington.

According to Leigh Grant Consulting, the standard will cover all stages of production, from broodstock to harvest. Auditors will have full access to Loch Duart sites and will be able to conduct unannounced visits.

"Importantly, and quite uniquely, whilst we will always audit documentation to ensure comprehensive record-keeping, these inspections will always focus on the fish and the majority of our time will be spent observing staff interactions with the salmon to ensure compliance with the 'Loch Duart Standard'," the consulting firm explained in a statement.

A few days ago, Loch Duart Salmon presented its smoked salmon range of products for top chefs, restaurants, and any foodie interested. These products are made using only two ingredients: Scottish salmon and pure sea salt.
