The Ministry of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia in Spain has confirmed that the Norwegian aquaculture company Seafood Legacy will begin the construction of its first salmon breeding plant in the region at the end of the year.
The plant, which already holds all the necessary permits to occupy around 20,000 m² in the port of Burela, is expected to produce around 3,300 tons of salmon annually and create up to 100 direct and indirect jobs.
This pioneering project in the area involves an investment of 80 million euros, of which the Xunta is expected to contribute around 30 million euros.
"This is very good news that was eagerly awaited in Burela, and for us, it is a true source of satisfaction because it is another industrial project that is being established in Galicia, one that trusts and bets on Galicia," stated María Jesús Lorenzana, the Minister of Economy and Industry.
According to the regional government, aquaculture in Galicia includes 2,510 companies and employs 4,460 people. Fish farms, marine ranches, and cultivation lines represent the second-largest source of income within the sector, accounting for more than 47% (137.92 million euros) of a total of 290 million euros.
Also, Lorenzana confirmed in May that Stolt Sea Farm plans to establish a new facility for the handling and packaging of flatfish (turbot and sole) in Rianxo (A Coruña).
This project, which only requires approval from the Consultative Council on Land Use and Urban Planning, will involve a €44 million investment and create 173 direct jobs.
The new plant will support the existing facility in Lira (Carnota) in the processing and packaging, as well as the automation of the processing of fresh turbot and sole farmed by the company.
