The Regional Minister of Economy and Industry of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana, has confirmed that Stolt Sea Farm plans to establish a new facility for the handling and packaging of flatfish (turbot and sole) in Rianxo (A Coruña).

This project, which only requires approval from the Consultative Council on Land Use and Urban Planning, will involve a €44 million investment and create 173 direct jobs.

The new plant will support the existing facility in Lira (Carnota) in the processing and packaging, as well as the automation of the processing of fresh turbot and sole farmed by the company.

In addition, it will include an R&D&i center, which will continue to collaborate with technology centers and other key research stakeholders.

Stolt Sea Farm in Galicia

Stolt Sea Farm is headquartered in Santiago de Compostela and operates 14 farms worldwide. Half of them are located in Galicia, with a total of seven flatfish farms situated along different parts of the Galician coast, employing more than 280 people.

“This company is promoting one of the 14 strategic industrial projects declared by the Xunta, each at different stages of processing, representing an investment of over €2.4 billion and more than 4,360 jobs,” Lorenzana recalled.

The company has just become the only farmed turbot producer in the world to obtain Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification for all its farms. This recognition was awarded by ASC CEO Chris Ninnes during the most recent edition of Seafood Expo Global, held in Barcelona.
