The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) and the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center (TCMAC) at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) offer a training program to support the expansion of off-bottom oyster aquaculture in the state.

Off-bottom oyster aquaculture is a cultivation technique in which oysters are grown in suspended or elevated structures above the seafloor, rather than directly on it.

The Aquaculture Advanced Seed Production Training Program provides instruction in technical skills such as water quality management, broodstock conditioning, larval care, seed production, and hatchery operations.

In this way, the organizations aim to help reduce dependence on seed suppliers from other states. Additionally, two production seasons are planned for 2025, with spawning events scheduled for July and September.

Program Phases

During July, participants spawned oysters using a mobile hatchery and took part in activities related to larval culture, setting pediveligers, and grading seed.

Subsequently, the program will transition to a full production phase, applying practical skills to real-world seed production, benefiting aquaculture operations across the state.

"Entering this next phase with the mobile hatchery will help participants build on the long-term success of the program and help ensure a more sustainable future for the seafood industry," explained MDMR Executive Director Joe Spraggins.
