The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) in Chile has carried out a historic labor competency certification process that formally recognizes 74 workers from the National Corporation of Women in Artisanal Fishing and Related Activities of Chile.

The evaluations covered 79 people in occupational profiles related to activities connected to artisanal fishing, which are essential to the production chain and have historically been carried out mostly by women without formal recognition.

"Since the implementation of the Registry in 2023, 6,600 registrations have been accepted, and a particularly notable fact is that more than 70% are women, mainly in activities such as shelling and filleting, highlighting the fundamental role women play in artisanal fishing and local economies," said the Co-Minister of Economy and Energy, Álvaro García.

Likewise, the Executive Director of ChileValora, Ximena Rivillo, explained: "The competency certification allows for the validation of the knowledge and experience acquired through daily work, opening new opportunities for employability, access to training programs, and strengthening the economic autonomy of the workers. It also helps establish quality and safety standards in key activities for artisanal fishing."

Subpesca and the environmental conservation organization WWF have been the driving forces behind the certification project for the occupational profiles by financing the creation of the mentioned profiles and Certification Pilots in seven related activities.

Meanwhile, ChileValora—a public service under the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare—developed the profiles by creating the competency units for each of them.

According to ChileValora, the goal was for those performing activities related to artisanal fishing to have their labor competencies (knowledge, skills, and abilities) certified, regardless of how they were acquired.
