A group of 10 Chilean women has received leadership training in the fishing sector through workshops on strengthening social organizations, organized by the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women (Prodemu).
This initiative is part of the Women's Table for Artisanal Fishing and Related Activities in the Tarapacá Region, a project led by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca).
"Our goal has been to create a space for individual and collective empowerment for participants from social organizations, such as artisanal fishing groups and unions, to improve their leadership and social impact from a rights-based and gender perspective," said Karen Guissen, Regional Director of Subpesca for the Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta regions.
The topics covered included: political empowerment of women, female leadership with a focus on Human Rights and civic participation, and internal communication to resolve conflicts and strengthen collaborations.
Additionally, Guissen stated: 'Without a doubt, this is a direct contribution to strengthening female fishers and those in related activities, who are either already leaders or plan to become leaders. These workshops—developed through Prodemu—are a great tool to maximize their potential and influence in their community.'
The director of Prodemu Tarapacá, Catalina Salgado, the regional minister of Women and Gender Equity, Noemi Salinas, along with professionals from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) and the regional office of Subpesca, presented participation diplomas to the ten women beneficiaries from Caleta San Marcos.
