AQUASUR 2024, the most important aquaculture fair in the southern hemisphere, registered a historic visitor record that translated into 22,738 attendees. This means a 97% increase compared to the previous 2022 edition.

From March 19th to 21st, the Chilean aquaculture industry gathered at Terminales Marítimos de la Patagonia Logistics Center in Chinquihue Alto, Puerto Montt. The exhibition was organized by FISA of the GL Events Group.

In more detail, it brought together over 480 exhibitors, 1,800 brands, and 20 participating countries, showcasing their new technologies, products, and innovations.

Regarding AQUASUR's impact on the country, Francisco Sotomayor, CEO of GL Events Chile, said: "When it comes to economic recovery, AQUASUR generated over 4,200 jobs, representing a direct impact of more than 12 million dollars in Puerto Montt and a significant boost to the hotel sector."

International Congress

The International Congress included 11 panels with participation from over 50 national and international speakers. Under the concept of "blue transformation" the main topics were around aquaculture's role in future food supply, perspectives of producing countries, challenges, and new technologies.

In addition, the exhibition attracted 3,751 international delegates, including representatives from the United States, Norway, Denmark, Brazil, and China, among other countries.

"The success of this edition of AQUASUR is attributed to several factors. One is our ability to bring together the vast majority of representatives from the country's leading aquaculture production companies; the leadership and commitment exhibited by industry associations and the entire aquaculture ecosystem; and the development of an industry that is growing sustainably, reflecting, through the fair, the strength of an economic activity that is second in importance in our country," stated Rodrigo Lobo, Acting General Manager of FISA.

The 'Yelcho Project' and a new cooperation agreement

SalmonChile, the Salmon Council, the Agricultural and Livestock Service, and Sernapesca have signed the 'Yelcho Project' to reduce the use of antibiotics in the aquaculture sector.

Moreover, Chile and Norway signed a new cooperation agreement on fisheries and aquaculture, focusing on food security and sustainable development.

Julio Salas, Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Chile, and Even Tronstad, State Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries of Norway, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries. The meeting between the two took place at AQUASUR 2024.
