India will host the largest global event in the field of seafood and aquaculture, World Seafood Congress 2026, for the first time. It will be organized by the International Association of Fish Inspectors (IAFI) in the city of Chennai.
The World Seafood Congress 2026 will include international conferences, workshops, trade fairs, academic competitions, award ceremonies, and technical visits.
Additionally, the event will bring together experts from both national and international backgrounds, such as scientists, researchers, chefs, policy analysts, aquaculture practitioners, food safety inspectors, technology developers, and professionals specializing in sustainability and supply chain management.
The President of IAFI, Dr. Ian Golding, emphasized that the Congress will "give a new direction to India's seafood and aquaculture sector, at a time when the country is experiencing remarkable growth in this industry."
According to data provided by the Indian Ministry of Fisheries, between 2014-15 and 2024-25, the volume of India's seafood exports grew by 60%, while value grew by 88%, and the number of export destinations expanded from 100 to 130 countries. Moreover, exports of value-added products tripled, indicating a transition to high-end global markets.
This event has been held every two years since 1999, and has previously taken place in Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, Morocco, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Malaysia, and Portugal.
Finally, the organization of the World Seafood Congress 2026 will involve collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in Hyderabad, and PDA Ventures Pvt. Ltd. as the host.
