The Peruvian Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has authorized the start of the first season of artisanal anchovy and white anchovy fishing activity in the maritime area between 16°00'LS and the southernmost extent of Peru's maritime domain.
According to the Ministry, the maximum catch limit is 251,000 tons, as Peruvian Institute of the Sea (IMARPE) recommendation which relies on developing a sustainable activity to promote the revitalization of the fishing sector.
Finally, the only vessels that can fish are the ones that have permits for anchovy resources destined for indirect human consumption, registered and authorized to carry out extraction activities during the current fishing season.
In February, Peru's government launched an expedition to assess the situation of the north-central stock of anchovy. Then, IMARPE created a report that enabled PRODUCE to have perspectives on the sustainable facts for the first fishing season of 2024.
