The government of Peru has launched an expedition to assess the situation of the north-central stock of anchovy. The Hydroacoustic evaluation cruise of anchovy and other pelagic resources is carried out by the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE).

The Minister of Production, Ana María Choquehuanca, who led the departure of the cruise, said: "The hydroacoustic evaluation cruise will allow us to gather precise and updated data, based on rigorous scientific evidence, which will help us better understand the dynamics of these species and make informed decisions to promote responsible fishing and the conservation of our marine resources."

With all the information gathered, IMARPE will create a report that will enable the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) to have perspectives on the sustainable use of the resource for the first fishing season of 2024.

The cruise will navigate from Puerto Pizarro (Tumbes) to Morro Sama (Tacna), mainly from 0.3 miles up to a distance of 100 miles from the coast. There are already planned cruises to assess the hake population and to investigate the giant squid.
