The AKVA group has signed a contract with Laxey to develop a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) facility in the Westman Islands, Iceland. Therefore, the first of six Grow-out modules will produce 4,500 tons of salmon annually, culminating in a total output of 27,000 tons.
Regarding this agreement, the CTO of Laxey, Hallgrímur Steinsson said: "We have had excellent cooperation with the AKVA group on the development of our Smolt RAS facility which is now up and running. We see this contract for the Grow-out project to be a continuation of our relationship for years to come. We are happy to keep the experience of the AKVA group on board."
In more detail, the AKVA group will design and install advanced oxygenation and degassing systems, SCADA, and electrical systems. Also, it will manage and give advice services during the entire project development.
Additionally, Jacob Bregnballe, Sales Director at AKVA group Land Based noted: "We have a lot of experience from previous Re-use projects that will surely contribute positively. We really look forward to continuing working with Laxey; we team up really well."
WeAreAquaculture informed in late March that Landsvirkjun (National Power Company of Iceland) agreed to collaborate with Laxey to install the electricity in the Westman facility.
In September 2023, the AKVA group and Laxey already collaborated to install the first true RAS smolt facility in the country (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland) for smolt. It was supported by Laxey's EUR 42 million financing.
