The Chilean Environmental Superintendence (SMA), through its Los Lagos Regional Office, has provided five Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) sensors to the Los Lagos regional office of the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca).

The Deep Trekker devices measure temperature, conductivity, turbidity, pH, oxygen, chlorophyll, and oxidation-reduction potential in the water column. This will strengthen monitoring control and oversight efforts.

This specific ROV was also provided by the SMA in November 2023. The robot is connected to a surface vessel and has a working depth capacity of 300 meters, equipped with a high-resolution camera.

"The collaboration between both institutions has been fundamental for environmental monitoring in the aquaculture sector. This transfer will allow us to continue improving oversight processes and have better data for decision-making," emphasized Superintendent Marie Claude Plumer.

Moreover, the National Director of Sernapesca, Soledad Tapia, stated that "the partnership and joint work developed with the SMA allow us to strengthen our role as guarantors of regulatory compliance, and these sensors will enable our monitoring staff to improve coverage for the monitoring and control of the impact of aquaculture activities."

This initiative is part of the Triangular Cooperation Project 'Technical, Technological, and Knowledge Management Strengthening for the Improvement of Environmental Oversight and Compliance of OEFA and SMA', implemented between the SMA, the Environmental Evaluation and Oversight Agency (OEFA) of Peru, and GIZ Germany.
