Mutag, a Denmark-based supplier of bio media and water treatment components for recirculating aquaculture systems, has acquired the intellectual property rights to fellow Danish RAS specialist Alpha Aqua, which according to Denmark's central business register CVR, entered bankruptcy in April 2025.

The IP acquisition, Mutag said in a press release, allows the Danish firm to extend its activities to include prefabricated filtration solutions and skid-based utility systems.

"Our focus remains on component deliveries while developing support systems for larger RAS facilities – enabling flexible, value-creating solutions for both existing and new customers," the company stated, adding that the acquisition supports its expertise in advanced water treatment, focusing on components and support rather than turnkey solutions.

“Acquiring Alpha Aqua’s IP rights is an important step towards delivering integrated solutions to our customers. We look forward to combining our expertise with Alpha Aqua’s technology to create innovative and scalable solutions,” said Jesper W. N. Nielsen, Chief Business Development Officer at Mutag, in a press release.

Customers currently using Alpha Aqua products will continue to receive service, maintenance, upgrades and access to complete system solutions under Mutag’s ownership, the company said.

Bankruptcies and acquisitions in Denmark's RAS technology sector

The news of Mutag's IP acquisition is the latest in a series of ups and downs in the Danish RAS aquatech sector.

As recently as 2024, the now defunct Alpha Aqua announced it had hired three former Billund Aquaculture employees to its team, after Billund also closed due to bankruptcy after 40 years in business, with its IP assets acquired by Norwegian firm Pure Salmon Technology.

Billund founder Christian Sørensen subsequently launched a new venture focused on RAS, Billund Aquatech, which rebranded as Globaq Solutions in April this year.
