Grieg Seafood has announced that Tytlandsvik Aqua, the post-smolt RAS facility it owns in partnership with Bremnes Seashore and Vest Havbruk, has acquired long-established smolt supplier Fister Smolt.
Grieg pointed to the existing ongoing "good collaboration" between the two Rogaland-based companies, and said the integration of Fister Smolt within the post-smolt business "will not bring any changes to this partnership".
Instead, Grieg Seafood said, the acquisition "will help strengthen the value chain" for the three joint owners, each of which have an equal share in the venture.
Grieg CEO Nina Willumsen Grieg said the takeover of Fister Smolt was "in line" with her company's post-smolt strategy. "It makes it possible to increase the optimization of production and operations, with associated cost efficiency," she explained in a statement published on the Grieg Seafood website.
The CEO had earlier elaborated on the benefits of this strategy, arguing that "the work done with post-smolt over many years is yielding good results. Our experience shows that when large post-smolt is released into the sea, mortality is halved," Willumsen Grieg said in October, when it was announced that Tytlandsvik Aqua would begin a planned expansion to its capacity in March 2026, expected to be completed in 2028. Once completed, the company is expected to have a total post-smolt capacity of around 9,000 tonnes per year.
Announcing the acquisition this month, Grieg Seafood highlighted Tytlandsvik's development in recent years which it said made the venture "one of the world's leading suppliers of post-smolt for sea-based aquaculture."
