The African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society has confirmed a new leadership team that will take office in January 2026, following an election process concluded last year.
Aquaculture researcher Dr Khalid Salie of South Africa has been elected president of the chapter for a two-year term. He takes over from Dr Foluke Areola of Nigeria, who has completed her term and has since been selected as president-elect of the World Aquaculture Society at global level, while continuing to hold an advisory role within the African Chapter.
Dr Salie is head of the aquaculture unit in the Department of Animal Sciences at Stellenbosch University and has been closely involved in the chapter’s development over a number of years, including earlier serving as regional director for Southern Africa.
The elections also confirmed Dr Francisca Delgado of Angola as president-elect and secretary.
The new board also includes regional directors Dr. Victoria Tarus (Kenya) representing Eastern Africa, Professor Daniel Adjei-Boateng (Ghana) for Western Africa, and Professor Maryam El Bakali (Morocco) taking the lead for Northern Africa.
The incoming board will guide the chapter through a busy period that includes preparations for major international events, notably World Aquaculture 2026, taking place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in early December, and World Aquaculture Ghana 2027, set to take place in Accra, Ghana, in November the following year.
