The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Cecilie Myrseth, has met her counterparts in the United States and Canada during the UN Ocean Conference in Barcelona to promote gender equality at sea.

To sum up, Myrseth has discussed how science and technology and Atlantic Ocean research can tackle ocean challenges and the importance of adhering to diversity to achieve progress.

In more detail, she expressed: "We need more women at sea who can contribute to innovation and development. Gender equality in the maritime and marine sectors is just as important beyond our national borders. Norway must be a driver for more international cooperation on gender equality at sea."

Also, she thanked the United States and Canada for being two important maritime nations that had similar interests with Norway regarding the promotion of gender equality in the maritime industries.

2024 UN Ocean Conference

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science Conference 2024 took place in Barcelona from April 10th to April 12th. It was organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO).

In 2017, The UN General Assembly identified the 2021 to 2030 decade as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to increase societal awareness about the oceans and be more aware of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

"The maritime industries can contribute to solving many global challenges, but development must happen sustainably. Norway has important knowledge and experience that we can share," noted Cecilie Myrseth.
