Peru invests $16 million in artisanal fishing infrastructures

The Minister of Production of Peru, Ana María Choquehuanca, has inaugurated the new Artisanal Landing Site of Puerto Morín in La Libertad.

The Minister of Production of Peru, Ana María Choquehuanca, has inaugurated the new Artisanal Landing Site of Puerto Morín in La Libertad. The infrastructure improvement project has been financed by the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES).

With the improvements made, it is expected to reach up to 120 tons of production per day, mainly of tuna, parrotfish, sea bass, and corvina, benefiting around 1.200 artisanal fishing agents directly and indirectly.

In the same line, Choquehuanca expressed the desire to deliver fresh fish to the tables of Peruvians: "For 2024, over $16 million has been allocated for the intervention of 24 artisanal fishing infrastructures nationwide. This demonstrates the commitment of this administration to our fishing sector development and the well-being of the communities that depend on it."

Disinfection areas and a new wastewater treatment plant

The project has implemented disinfection areas, pretreatment facilities, cold chambers, administrative buildings, complementary services, and general services.

Also, installations and equipment for industrial effluent disposal which came from the pre-task area. Moreover, a submarine outfall, a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and a reverse osmosis system.

Úrsula León Chempén, Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Katia Novoa Sánchez, Head of FONDEPES; Diego Bazán, Congressman of the Republic; the provincial mayor of Virú, Javier Mendoza; Daniel García, President of the Association of Artisanal Fishermen and Aquaculturists of Puerto Morín Cove; Faustino Nunja, President of the Association of Small Shipowners and Aquaculturists of Puerto Morín; and Joel Mallqui, President of the Association of Small Shipowners, Divers, and Artisanal Crew, Extractors, and Aquaculturists of Puerto Morín attended the inauguration.

Finally, it is planned that by the third quarter of 2024, the Artisanal Landing Site of Chancay will be completed. This will benefit over 2900 artisanal fishermen in the area, according to the government.
