During the first six months of 2025, Peru’s Ministry of Production (Produce), through the National Fisheries Development Fund (FONDEPES), has trained 4,977 artisanal fishers and aquaculture farmers.

Specifically, FONDEPES carried out 165 training activities, strengthening the skills of 3,335 artisanal fishing agents in the country's main fishing regions.

"We have deployed these training initiatives in 14 regions across the country. In doing so, we reaffirm our commitment to the development of the artisanal fishing sector at the national level," said Produce Minister Sergio González Guerrero.

The courses with the highest number of participants were: Hygiene, Handling, and Preservation of Fishery Resources, which improves sanitary practices in the handling of aquatic resources; MAM 010: Experienced Artisanal Fishing Deckhand Certification; and Best Practices for the Release of Sea Turtles, Seabirds, and Other Species in Bycatch.

Aquaculture Training

Also, between January and June 2025, a total of 1,642 aquaculture producers were trained in the regions of Áncash, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Junín, La Libertad, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Piura, Puno, San Martín, and Tumbes.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to strengthen the technical skills of aquaculture farmers and promote the cultivation of species with high nutritional, commercial, and social value, particularly Amazonian fish, trout, tilapia, and bivalve mollusks, among others.

Participants were able to improve their farming practices and techniques, enhance the management of their production units, and promote a more sustainable and competitive aquaculture sector.
