The Ministry of Production in Peru (PRODUCE) has welcomed representatives from the Committee on Fisheries (COFI), a subsidiary body of the FAO Council, and shared with them information about the actions in the country's fishing and aquaculture sector.

Peru is in the process of joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This forum brings together 38 countries that design and promote public policies in favor of citizens.

Regarding this process, the Minister of Production, Sergio González, stated: "I am sure that joining the OECD will help us achieve better public policies that promote the sustainability and competitiveness of our fishing activities."

Work sessions and guide tours

Fisheries Policy Analysts William Symes and Lorena Rivera participated in work sessions to gather information about the government's initiatives and future actions to strengthen policies and practices in the fishing and aquaculture sector.

Peru now needs the favorable opinion of the organization's 24 committees that are evaluating its candidacy, including COFI.

Additionally, guided tours were conducted at the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (IMARPE), the National Fisheries Health Agency (SANIPES), and the Production Technology Institute (ITP).

Finally, COFI representatives visited the CITEpesquero Callao to gather information about policies and practices in the Peruvian fishing and aquaculture sector, and the IMARPE facilities to learn about the various research laboratories.

According to PRODUCE, the fishing sector contributed the most to the Peruvian economy in April of 2024. It registered an increase of 158.40% compared to the same month of 2023.
