Aquaculture technology specialist Smir has announced the acquisition of lighting technology company Ambiente Aqua.

The Norwegian group - which claims to be "constantly in search of improvement potential and further development" - has delousing, waterborne feeding, and pen technology as its main areas of interest but continues to identify needs and improvement possibilities for the sector.

Lighting in fish farming is one of those needs/possibilities. Thus, it is not surprising that, in the LinkedIn post announcing the news, Smir stated that this addition to its portfolio strengthens its position as a provider of aquaculture technology and service solutions for the fish farming industry.

"We have worked well and for a long time with two setups that involve the use of UV-LED technology, and we see this technology as an exciting area of focus for the Smir Group," said newly appointed Smir Group CEO, Frank Øren.

Also Norwegian, Ambiente Aqua was founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs Kurt Magne Berge, Roald Rø, and Gunder Andre Johansen, and is currently focused on the development of lighting and energy systems, with special emphasis on UV-LED lighting.

"Ambiente's technology fits very well with what we are working on, which is why we have chosen to acquire the company," Smir's Group CEO and co-founder, Frank Øren, added.

In February, Smir already acquired KB Group to invest in submersible pen systems. In addition, during the first half of the year, the Norwegian aquatech supplier group also reached two important agreements in water feeding.

In the first one, also announced in February, it did not provide a name, but only said it was a new customer for them in this field showing confidence in its technical solutions and team's expertise. In the second, whereas, we did learn that the recipient of its waterborne feeding system, Smirfeeder™, would be Andfjord Salmon.
