The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has confirmed the achievement of the Vietnam Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 1 (RIA1) in successfully breeding yellowtail amberjack for its first time in history, as reported by the news portal VietNamNet Global.

As stated in the article, yellowtail amberjack is a highly valued fish in Japan, with a price of around 1 million VND per kilogram (approximately 40 USD/kg). Therefore, this achievement opens significant potential for the offshore aquaculture sector at an industrial scale in Vietnam.

In 1991, an initial attempt was made to cultivate yellowtail amberjack using wild-caught broodstock. However, this model proved unsustainable due to reliance on wild fish. Japan and China have also attempted this, but their climatic conditions are not suitable.

RIA1 is an organization under the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). Its main function is to carry out scientific and technological research in the field of aquaculture, including: Genetic and Seed production; Aquaculture techniques; Environment management and disease prevention; Resource protection and development for coastal and freshwater areas; Post-harvesting technology; Technology innovation and transfer.

Yellowtail's aquaculture potential

Spain is another country that sees clear potential in the aquaculture production of yellowtail. Academia and the industry met at a seminar at the University of Almeria to discuss the future of farming this species in Spain.

Also known in the country as 'lemon fish' (amberjack), 'medregal', or 'lecha', given its characteristics, this species is gaining attention as a way of maximum interest for the diversification of Spanish aquaculture.

Almeria is already producing yellowtail, and the company responsible for this production in Almeria is precisely Ocean Aquaculture Global. With an annual production capacity of 12,000 metric tons, its offshore farm project in the Andalusia region focuses on farming yellowtail and meagre (Argyrosomus regius).
