Manufacturer GroAqua has confirmed that its feed barge, Torvgjógv, has arrived in Fuglafjørður, a town and fishing port located in the Faroe Islands, to become the latest addition to Bakkafrost's fleet.
The 40-meter barge, built in Poland, has a feed capacity of 700 tonnes and is equipped with 18 feeding lines, allowing it to feed 18 sea cages simultaneously.
Meanwhile, the feeding system and control software were developed by GroAqua in the Faroe Islands and use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to optimize feed utilization in the cages more efficiently.
In addition, to support more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly farming operations in the future, the barge is prepared to operate using shore power.
In June 2025, GroAqua had already delivered a 1,100-ton feed barge to Bakkafrost, making it the world’s largest feed barge. Thanks to its large capacity, it does not need to be restocked as frequently as smaller-capacity barges, which reduces the risk of disruptions to feeding operations in remote sites.
"Based on our positive experience with previous feed barges from GroAqua, we expect Torvgjógv to further strengthen operations at our farming site in Fuglafjørður," said Oddvald Olsen, Site Manager at Bakkafrost.
Aditionally, Head of Feed Barge Department at GroAqua, Kristian Andreasen, noted: "We are very grateful for the trust Bakkafrost continues to show us by choosing another GroAqua feed barge. In close collaboration with Bakkafrost, we have developed a barge we are truly proud of. We continuously work on improving our feed barges together with farmers and operators in the field."
