Faroese salmon farming company Bakkafrost has taken delivery of a new feed barge described as the "world's largest", according to manufacturer GroAqua.

"The barge was delivered today. There are some final preparations to do before its being towed to one of the large exposed sites in the Faroe Islands," GroAqua announced via a LinkedIn post.

According to GroAqua, the barge, which has a feed capacity of 1,100 tons and is equipped with 24 feeding lines, is "built to withstand rough weather and operate on exposed sites."

Its large capacity means it does not need to be restocked as frequently as smaller capacity barges, reducing the risk of disruption to feeding in remote sites, GroAqua said.

The fish feeding specialist said it is building three further such barges for the aquaculture industry, although it did not specify who the recipients of these will be.

"The massive feeding barges are going to be operated by a combination of GroAqua’s FishFeeder and GroVision solutions. A proven way to efficiently and sustainably feed fish autonomously and semi autonomously," GroAqua stated.

Headquartered in the Faroe Islands, GroAqua also operates in Poland, Scotland, and Norway, and employs 100 staff members. The company was formerly known as JT Electric until its rebranding as GroAqua in 2023.

The company acquired British aquaculture and water treatment supplier Sterner AquaTech UK in 2020, and in January 2024, GroAqua merged with Havida, a Norwegian aquatech company specialising in sensing and technological control in aquaculture operations.

In April 2025, GroAqua appointed Niels Brynnum as its new CEO, citing his "extensive leadership experience from several well-established companies", including having "worked extensively in the supplier industry for aquaculture across several countries".

In May, Brynnum appointed John Petersen as the group's new Managing Director for GroAqua Faroe Islands. Petersen originally joined GroAqua as its Chief Financial Officer, and also previously held the role of interim CEO at the company.
