The Danish company Unibio, specialized in microbial protein production, has achieved Saudi Arabia Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) approval for its microbial single-celled protein brand Uniprotein® for use in aquaculture applications.
In April 2023, the SFDA began testing the product for feed for fish, shrimp, and crustaceans. This allows Unibio to sell Uniprotein® and have it tested under commercial conditions in Saudi Arabia.
"This is a significant step into the Kingdom, a key region that is working towards feed and food self-sufficiency under the Vision 2030 programme, while increasing local fish production," Unibio CCO Olivier Hartz assured.
According to Unibio, Uniprotein® is a high-quality protein comparable to fishmeal and soybean meal. Its production requires no arable land, has very low water use, and has no negative impact on the Earth's ecosystem. It has already been approved in the European Union, Japan, India, Thailand, Russia, and Chile.
In 2023, the Danish company signed an agreement with the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG) that invested USD 70 million (EUR 65.8 million) to boost its global production capacity, increase operational capabilities, and accelerate innovation and commercialization.
