The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) in Chile has reported that during the first five months of 2025, landings of anchovy and common sardine more than doubled compared to the same period last year.
According to the latest sectoral report, cumulative anchovy landings reached 270.7 thousand metric tons, more than twice the volume recorded in May 2024. The Northern Macrozone (Norte Grande) contributed 56.3% of the national total.
Similarly, common sardine landings totaled 288.5 thousand metric tons, also representing an increase of over 100% compared to the same period the previous year. The Biobío Region accounted for 88.4% of the national total.
Finally, jumbo flying squid landings reached 77.9 thousand metric tons, a 30.4% increase compared to the same month in 2024. Regions from Valparaíso to Los Lagos led the operation, contributing 77.5% of the national total, 4.8% more than during the same period last year.
As of May 2025, total cumulative landings in Chile amounted to 2.2 million metric tons, an increase of 16.7% compared to the same date in 2024, and 10.3% above the five-year average.
In late April, Subpesca reported the status of fisheries nationwide, with 54% of them in a healthy state according to the data verified in 2024. Also, the organization has approved 57 projects to be carried out under the research program for the regulation of fisheries and aquaculture in 2025.
