The European Union and the Government of Guinea-Bissau have begun the first round of negotiations for the renewal of the protocol of the sustainable fishing agreement, which affects around twenty Spanish vessels fishing in the waters of the African country.

Therefore, Spain can ensure its activity outlined in the protocol that expires on June 14th. Around twenty Spanish trawling vessels to catch shellfish and cephalopod trawling and Tuna seiners with freezing capabilities operate in this zone. There are no other alternatives in the area since the EU does not have fishing agreements with other countries.

The agreed negotiation schedule includes a next round from April 23rd to 26th in Lisbon, not been confirmed yet. It will end with a third round in Guinea-Bissau, which would take place between May 6th and 8th, where both parties hope to finalize the renewal of the protocol.

The opening ceremony of the negotiation round was attended by the Director-General of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, Charlina Vitcheva, and the Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Guinea-Bissau, Mario Musante da Silva Loureiro.
