The Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans, and Canadian Coast Guard will support financially eight projects under the Quebec Fisheries Fund (QFF). In addition, it will launch the Newport Harbour phase 2 construction, Minister Diane Lebouthillier confirmed.

According to a press statement released by the Canadian Government, this innovative harbor infrastructure will allow fish harvesters to develop and acquire high-performance tools. Furthermore, these initiatives will support the economic health of coastal communities, and promote a blue economy.

"With this announcement, combined with the projects funded by the QFF, our government is once again sending a clear signal of its serious commitment to supporting the fishing industry throughout Quebec," Lebouthillier expressed.

On the other hand, Quebec's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food André Lamontagne alerted: "Fisheries and aquaculture companies must innovate to stand out in a changing ecosystem and to remain competitive. I am pleased with this funding supporting projects that will benefit the communities of Eastern Quebec."

Quebec Fisheries Fund

The Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec have announced more than $650,000 in funding for eight projects in the Gaspé region and on the North Shore.

These projects aim to improve the efficiency, quality, and sustainability of Quebec's fish and seafood sector and enhance the market value of local fish and seafood.

Precisely, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has been giving priority to projects related to redfish. In late January, it confirmed that the commercial Redfish fishery in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Unit 1) located in Atlantic Canada and Quebec will reopen this year, following several consultations.

As part of the QFF extension to 2026, the total contribution from both governments amounts to $11.6 million.
