The USA's marine fisheries and conservation agency, NOAA Fisheries, has launched a 45-day public comment period in support of the Executive Order to Restore the Competitiveness of U.S. Seafood, signed by President Donald Trump on April 17.

Specifically, NOAA Fisheries wants to know how to improve fisheries management and science, with an emphasis on updating and improving regulations, using more cost-effective and efficient technologies, modernizing data collection and forecasting, and expanding exempted fishing permit programs.

"Through our implementation of the President's Executive Order, NOAA Fisheries is aiming to address the recent decline in fisheries landings and revenues. We look forward to receiving input from the public," said Assistant Administrator of NOAA Fisheries, Eugenio Piñeiro Soler.

Several of the actions already underway and in line with the principles of the Executive Order include reviewing commercial fishing limitations in existing marine national monuments and updating the Seafood Trade Strategy.

Finally, NOAA Fisheries, in coordination with other federal agencies and partners, is working to evaluate and modify advanced technology strategies and develop an Interagency Seafood Strategy for the United States, under the "America First" initiative.
