The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food in Spain has increased the individual catch limits per vessel for red shrimp in the Mediterranean for the year 2025 to a total of 45.9 tons.
Of this total, approximately 35.9 tons come from a quota exchange with France, reached after intensive negotiations, and an additional 10 tons from the reserve fund.
This adjustment affects the 286 vessels included in the Mediterranean bottom trawl fleet that have a history of catches of this species in recent years.
This measure will help strengthen the Mediterranean bottom trawl sector, especially during the summer and Christmas fishing seasons, and will allow better planning by vessel owners.
Additionally, to facilitate operational management for both vessels and associated entities, the possibility of jointly using catch limits has been enabled. This will help optimize the use of the available quotas.
The Spanish government aims to ensure "better organization of the fishery and optimization of the quota, as well as greater predictability for the sector," according to the Ministry’s statement.
Furthermore, the Ministry has modified this year some fishing bans to help conserve demersal resources in the Mediterranean Sea. For example, the spatial and temporal limits of some of the four-week fishing bans established along the Spanish Mediterranean coastline were adjusted to protect the breeders of European hake populations.
Also, the four-week continuous fishing bans for the different geographic subzones are now unified into a single section, with some modifications regarding the periods and areas.
