Thai Union Group has inaugurated its new 8,000-metric-ton cold store for its Pioneer Food Cannery (PFC) factory in Tema, Ghana, where the temperature of Atlantic tuna will be controlled year-round. It has four storage halls and is already in full operation.

The Group has invested $14 million to ensure that its factory achieves the necessary volumes for year-round production through vertical integration and optimization of its supply chain.

Regarding this addition, the Plant Director for PFC Johnny Ladouce, detailed: "Thanks to our new cold store we will cut traffic and CO2 emissions while ensuring we can produce throughout the year and independent of fluctuating fish supply."

On the other hand, Thiraphong Chansiri, President and CEO of Thai said: "Our PFC factory plays a vital role for our brands across Europe and the U.S. This investment will further improve our supply security and competitiveness serving our customers."

Finally, Chansiri mentioned that the next investment in this factory will consist of SeaChange® 2030 sustainability plan development to minimize waste to landfills, water discharge, and food loss.

New cold store system

With this new facility, Thai Union will no longer use rented cold storage spaces scattered across the city. This way, it saves on rental costs, reduces the number of truck trips needed to transport raw products and maintains full control over product quality.

By processing everything in-house, full control over product quality is maintained, from storage to shipment, thereby further enhancing the factory's competitiveness.

PFC, operating since 1973 and acquired by Thai Union in 2010, is the Group’s second-largest factory in Africa and employs approximately 1,100 people.

This factory supplies John West, MareBlu, and private-label customers across Europe, and is the epitome of ambient tuna in Ghana, Starkist.
