Festival Foods became the first retailer in the United States to offer domestically raised Atlantic salmon.

Superior Fresh has confirmed that it completed the first harvest of fish at its new Indiana facility in July, coinciding with the anniversary of its retail market launch in July 2018.
"With this expansion, we expect to significantly increase our production capacity, enabling us to serve both our existing partners and new customers across the retail and foodservice sectors," the company said in a statement.
Eight years ago, Festival Foods became the first retailer in the United States to offer domestically raised Atlantic salmon, produced at Superior Fresh's aquaponics facility in Wisconsin.
The U.S. company's integrated aquaponics system enables it to raise Atlantic salmon in a fully controlled environment, free from antibiotics and pesticides, unlike conventional ocean farming. Its salmon has also earned the 'Best Choice' rating from Seafood Watch, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's sustainable seafood program.
In 2024, the company announced the construction of its second farm in Albany, Indiana, with the aim of significantly increasing its production capacity and supplying a growing number of retail and foodservice customers.
More companies are embracing aquaponics technology to develop sustainable production systems. For example, in 2025, Innovasea announced a new partnership with the Andrew J. Young Foundation to develop two integrated aquaponics facilities in the United States.
The project, called Forever Young Aquaponics, is managed by Forever Young Farms, a program of the Andrew J. Young Foundation, established by civil rights leader and diplomat Ambassador Andrew J. Young.
