The governments of India and Israel have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen India's fisheries and aquaculture sector and improve the livelihoods of its coastal communities through technology-driven sustainable practices and the blue economy.
Also, this collaboration will promote the establishment of new Indo-Israeli Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in fisheries and aquaculture, as well as provide technical resources for the creation of an oceanarium in India.
In this way, biosecure and climate-resilient farming models will be developed, suitable for regions facing water scarcity or affected by climate change, along with new therapies, non-invasive alternatives, and scientific approaches to improve disease resistance.
To oversee these activities and implement the solutions, a Joint Working Group (JWG) will be established, which will meet annually, either in person or virtually, alternating between India and Israel.
The signing was attended by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Minister of the Department of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Israel, Avi Dichter, and the Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
"This historic MoU reflects the shared commitment of India and Israel to deepen cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture, promote innovation, and strengthen sustainable and climate-resilient development in the sector," said a statement from the Government of India.
In February, the ICAR–Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) in India organized the national workshop “Freshwater Aquaculture Technology Dissemination in India: Charting the Way Ahead” with the aim of promoting the adoption of proven freshwater aquaculture technologies in the country.
