Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)
The global initiative Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) has launched the first science-based targets for the oceans, focusing on seafood. These guidelines help companies align their goals with environmental needs, promoting the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.
First, to avoid and reduce overexploitation in wild fisheries, companies should avoid reliance on products derived from overexploited stocks and engage more in marine landscapes and jurisdictions to improve stock health.
Additionally, industry agents must protect marine habitats, covering wild fisheries and aquaculture sites, and reducing their impacts on structural and transitional habitats.
The last target addresses the impacts on endangered, threatened, and protected (ETP) marine wildlife from wild capture fishing and aquaculture.
This initiative has been developed under the leadership of the World Wildlife Fund and Conservation International, with the support of a Steering Committee that includes the Marine Stewardship Council, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, FishWise, UNEP FI, The Nature Conservancy, and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.
The Science Based Targets Network is a civil society and science-led initiative founded in 2019 by a group of global NGOs who have come together to help collectively define what is necessary for companies and cities to do "enough" to stay within Earth's limits and meet society’s needs.
