Chicken of the Sea Frozen Foods, Thai Union Group PCL, and Whole Foods Market have signed a collaboration agreement to achieve a reduction of up to 30% in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in shrimp value chains.

The carbon-reduction pilot program includes the implementation of renewable energy at scale in shrimp farms, ensuring that shrimp feed that uses soy deforestation- and land conversion-free, and optimizing energy use on farms to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

In addition, Whole Foods Market will drive energy efficiency in its stores, facilities, and operations, and will collaborate with its suppliers to accelerate carbon reduction efforts and achieve continuous progress toward a lower carbon footprint.

"We recognize that meaningful climate action requires collaboration with our suppliers, farmers, and stakeholders across the food system to identify and implement innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at every step," indicated Principal Sustainability Program Manager, Cameron Crake.

Moreover, Senior Director of Sustainability Blake Stok said, "This is just the beginning. We have ambitious plans underway to expand our shrimp decarbonization program—and we're excited to share more soon."

In May, Thai Union Group secured the first-ever Blue Loan for Thailand’s seafood industry, valued at $150 million, from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Group confirmed it will use the funds to expand the sustainable sourcing of shrimp in the country, supporting its goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 under its SeaChange® 2030 strategy, launched in 2023.
